Amazing Raise 2014 Closeup: Greater Richmond

The Amazing Raise, A 36-hour giving marathon for Central Virginia’s nonprofits, kicks off Wednesday morning September 17th at 6 a.m. and runs through 6 p.m. on Thursday September 18th. Here’s what second year participant, Project Yoga Richmond has planned for this year:

– A 36-hr. YogaThon anyone is invited to stop by the studio and experience the many benefits of yoga at a time convenient to them- whether that is at 3:00 a.m. or 12:00 noon!

– Showcasing instructors and classes to tell a story about how PYR can change lives by making yoga accessible to everyone

– Disco yoga with a DJ

– Restorative yoga at midnight coupled with melodic live sounds

– Tibetan Rites of Rejuvenation

– Food Trucks

“Before we participated in The Amazing Raise last year, we had only a few channels for raising funds.  In the past year we’ve expanded our budget, and therefore we’ve also expanded our outreach by more than 40%”.

– Dana Walters, Co-founder, Project Yoga Richmond

What would you like people to know about your organization?

We believe yoga is for everyone.  You don’t have to be flexible or fit.  You don’t have to be anything but yourself.  That is what the practice of yoga teaches: to be steady, to breathe, and to enjoy the moments that we have. And that is the undercurrent of our whole organization. Our wide range of donation-based studio classes makes free and accessible yoga through our many community partners, possible for people in need. And whether you step on your mat at our studio or you make a donation to PYR, you empower others! As Outreach Program Coordinator, I witness the benefits of yoga practice on a regular basis! From teens with Autism, to those coping with addiction, or adults with different abilities, there’s a strong sense that this is our community at its best. We’re proud to make that possible at Project Yoga Richmond.

How does support through The Amazing Raise strengthen your organization and the community?

We are run almost entirely by volunteers and have an extremely low overhead. Almost everything we raise goes to providing free, reduced-cost, or donation-based yoga in our community.  So, when you make a $50 donation online, for example, you can be sure you are doing any of the following: paying for a whole class serving one of our community partners, buying 5 yoga mats for those who can’t afford their own, or supporting a special training at our studio.  Your gift goes directly toward our mission. And before we participated in The Amazing Raise last year, we had only a few channels for raising funds.  In the past year we’ve expanded our budget, and therefore we’ve also expanded our outreach by more than 40%. We now roll out between 1,200-1,500 mats each month through Project Yoga Richmond, both in-studio and in our community outreach work.  I can only imagine how many people we can bring yoga to after this year’s event. This is a possibility almost unheard of prior to our involvement with The Amazing Raise. So we are grateful for the opportunity to participate once again. As we often say at PYR, “Together, We Can Do More”– and with The Amazing Raise, that’s especially true!
