User Spotlight: Mike Roberts, Petersburg Family YMCA

Tell us about yourself:

My name is Mike Roberts and I am the Executive Director of the Petersburg Family YMCA. I have been with the YMCA for 18 years, nationally and internationally. I began in London, England; spent a year in Zimbabwe and recently came to Petersburg from Clearwater, Florida. I also work for the YMCA national office as a facilitator for LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a cancer survivor exercise program (one we’ve just introduced to Petersburg!).

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

The fact that the YMCA has a financial assistance program that allows us to never have to turn anyone away because of their inability to pay. I have found that the YMCA is a much loved and much needed organization in this community.

How is your work having an impact on our community?

Petersburg is ranked 131 out of 131 localities in Virginia in terms of health statistics. The YMCA in Petersburg is working to improve the health and wellness of individuals and families.

How do you maintain your own wellness?

I try and focus on the positive aspects of my work. I also make time for my own health and peace of mind.  You need to be fit and well before you help others become fit and well.

What’s next?

We are in the middle of a capital campaign to renovate our facility. We are very close to achieving our goal to upgrade the gymnasium. Seeing over a hundred teens on our free teen nights, step out onto a new, shiny wood basketball court for the first time will be very exciting!
