Emerging Nonprofit Leaders 2018-2019 Announced

The Community Foundation for a greater Richmond is excited to announce the selected participants for the 2018-2019 cohort of Emerging Nonprofit Leaders!

The Emerging Nonprofit Leaders Program is a dynamic nine-month experience for the next generation of nonprofit leaders in the metro Richmond area. In this engaging program, participants can foster a deeper understanding of their leadership capacity, advance their understanding and practice of leading in the nonprofit sector, and strengthen their network of nonprofit colleagues.

Now in its twelfth year of operation, the program has demonstrated measurable results, building a cadre of talented leaders for the future of the Greater Richmond community.

In addition to participating in engaging sessions on topics including strategic leadership, organizational change, collaboration, and coaching others, participants:

  • Experience team building through rigorous and challenging activities in an outdoor setting
  • Develop deep relationships with other nonprofit leaders
  • Participate in a live nonprofit case study
  • Increase awareness of their leadership through a thorough assessment process, including 360-degree feedback and the Birkman Method Assessment
  • Benefit from individual leadership coaching, provided by professionals with experience in leadership development and nonprofit management
  • Network between sessions by engaging in dialogue with the other participants and instructors
  • Interact with five local exemplary Executives-in-Residence in a forum where they share their experiences and perspectives
  • Participate in Small Peer Practice groups led by ENLP Alumni
  • Have access to a supportive online cohort-based e-learning platform.

Selection Process

Nonprofit applicants were selected based on their potential to make a significant future contribution to the nonprofit community through assuming higher and increased levels of leadership, show substantive history of involvement in the nonprofit sector through employment, volunteerism, or board service and demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional development, continuing education, and lifelong learning.

In August, a committee made up of ENLP Alumni reviewed applications to ensure that the 12th cohort met above criteria and that the group would be diverse and comprehensive representation of the local nonprofit sector.

2018 Course Catalog is Live: What You Need to Know

The wait is over. You may now register for classes scheduled for the early part of 2018. Before you get started, we hope you will read this blog to better understand our philosophy and values, as well as some new elements of our programming. We hope you share our excitement for the year ahead and we look forward to seeing you soon. Continuous Learning In 1998, The Community Foundation was a co-collaborator and co-investor in the creation of Especially for Nonprofits, a program designed to meet the unique professional development needs of our local nonprofit sector. It quickly became an important resource for those working for, or on behalf of, community based organizations. Over the years, the program has evolved – in name, content and format – in response to changing dynamics in our community, as well as input and insight from course participants, nonprofit leaders and education professionals. What remains consistent is our belief that strong, skilled leaders – regardless of position or tenure – are essential in building strong, sustainable organizations and a healthy, thriving community. We will continue to help nonprofit staff, boards and volunteers build knowledge and skills through affordable, high quality learning events. Through diverse programming and partnerships, the sector can bring greater efficiency and effectiveness to its mission-driven work.

Impacts and Implications of the Election on RVA Nonprofits

No matter how you’re feeling about the new president, one thing can be certain: changes in government - local, state and federal - have a huge impact on the nonprofit field. Whether those impacts are positive or negative, our sectors are intertwined and changes in legislation, leadership and government funding can and will have a trickle-down effect on nonprofit operations, philanthropy, volunteerism, services for vulnerable populations and so much more. In January, The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia gathered alumni of its Emerging Nonprofit Leaders Program (ENLP) to discuss anticipated impacts and implications of the federal election on their work as nonprofit leaders. Led by Susan Wilkes (the ENLP Lead Faculty), the robust conversation covered topics from “leading through political uncertainty” to “what nonprofits are doing and could do as they prepare for government changes”.
