Get to know Beth Panilaitis, Executive Director at ROSMY and 2012 honoree of Style Weekly’s Top 40 Under 40. She will be the opening speaker during YNPN RVA’s upcoming event – The Top 40 Under 40 Nonprofit Spotlight with Style Weekly, which you can register for here by November 16th.
What are the top 3 things you want people to know about you?
- I love a challenge. And I thrive when there is a challenge in front of me, especially regarding social justice issues.
- I don’t do social media (besides LinkedIn). I still write a lot of letters that require a stamp.
- Reading the newspaper on Sunday mornings with a strong cup of coffee is one of my favorite things.
How do you keep yourself learning and growing?
As cliché as it may sound, I try to see everything as a learning experience, especially the most difficult or trying experiences. I am grateful that I have the opportunity to work with some incredible people professionally who teach me new things every day.
What was one defining moment in your life?
In college I had an internship at Powhatan Correctional Center. Up until that point, I planned to be a clinical social worker and go into private practice. My experience there exposed me to the systemic issues both in our criminal justice system and social service systems. That was the moment that I realized I wanted to go into macro practice, that I wanted to understand policy and systems and be a change agent and advocate, especially for the most underserved in our community.
What do you love most about RVA?
There is so much to love! It’s a great place to live, work and play. There is such a sense of community in Richmond and I love being part of that.
