Get to know Rob Courain, Founder and CEO of Live to Serve – and this week’s ConnectVA Spotlight:
Tell us about you.
My name is Rob Courain and I’m Founder and CEO of Live to Serve (livetoserve.com). Live to Serve is an online platform that sells vouchers to local businesses whereby 50-80% of every purchase is donated to the local nonprofit or church of the shopper’s choice.
Through our site, people can shop from over 70 local businesses and choose from approximately 4,000 local nonprofits to support just through their everyday shopping.
How is your work aligning with ConnectVA’s mission of empowering individuals, advancing organizations, or strengthening our community?
For most people, unless you work at a nonprofit or a church, community service is a once in a while type of endeavor. The fact is no matter how much passion we have to serve our community or to help others, for most of us our ability is limited because we only have so much money to give or only so much time to volunteer.
Live to Serve is a great and easy way for people to serve their community and to help their favorite nonprofits without limit through their daily transactions and by doing the things they like doing most. We also serve as an easy way for nonprofits to raise money without having to ask their supporters for a typical donation.
What do you find most rewarding about your work?
I am constantly amazed of just how many people care about our community and want to give back. It’s really cool that through our website we get to bring them all together (people, businesses, and nonprofits).
Tell us about your biggest accomplishment in this position.
What we are doing is still so new. People are not used to being able to shop at local businesses, get the same full value they would anyway, and have an additional 50-80% go to the nonprofit of their choosing. Live to Serve is also a relatively new concept for merchants to embrace and I’m proud that we’ve been able to amass so many in such a short period of time with such high percentages going back to local nonprofits. Like in any new endeavor persistence is the key, and it’s fun to see more and more people and organizations jumping onboard!
What’s coming next for your organization that really excites you?
Over the next few months we will continue in our effort to land more and more businesses on our site, and will be launching more marketing efforts to get the word out that this service is available. Still, not too many people know about Live to Serve and it’s going to be exciting to see the response as more and more people get to know that this resource is available in RVA!
How are you leveraging ConnectVA to achieve your mission?
ConnectVA has been great to us. We’ve very much appreciated their promotion of the Live to Serve platform and are so appreciative for the important work they do in bringing the nonprofit community together in RVA.
Anything else you would like to share?
I’d just like to take this opportunity to thank the nonprofit community for the work you do. There are needs in our community that need to be addressed and you guys are on the front lines of addressing those needs. Thanks for all you do!
