Ask a Lawyer: Fundraising

September 14 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm

| Free

The Collaboratory of Virginia at UTurn, in conjunction with the Greater Richmond Bar Foundation (GRBF), is pleased to offer the Ask a Lawyer series. Lawyers from GRBF will present on a topic relevant to nonprofits and be available for questions.

September: Nonprofit Fundraising

with Phyllis Katz from UR School of Law

Sample Topics : Solicitation vs gift vs commercial activity, dangers to exempt status, IRS reporting and form 990, income and sales tax issues, gaming, policies and procedures for successful fundraising.

Questions You May Be Asking:

Why would IRS care about how funds are raised if the money is used to support charitable activities?
What income producing activities would result in payment of state and federal income tax?
What is the difference between sponsorship revenue and advertising revenue?
Sample Scenarios:

Your organization is asked to partner with a restaurant. The commercial entity agrees that 5% of all sales during the month of March will be donated to the organization. The organization must commit to announcing the joint venture to all on its mailing list, may have volunteers there to distribute literature, and to help wait staff if necessary. Is there a problem with this?
A free dental clinic, has been approached by a dentist who wants to rent the vacant offices in the building owned by the organization. Will this rental agreement have tax consequences for the organization? Would there be a problem if the dentist is on the board of the organization?
Send your questions in ahead of time! Email hgordon@u-turn.org with your scenarios and questions.

This is a virtual session. Tickets are free.
