Thrive in a Constantly Changing World

September 25 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

| $50

Thrive in a Constantly Changing World with tools nonprofit leaders and teams can engage in.

This session provides participants with a reminder of our reactive tendencies when we experience threat, and the framework and methodologies of four VUCA Tools (Values, Us, Curiosity, and Aspirations) to enable you to thrive instead of just survive in the midst of challenging times. These tools can enable you to think strategically and respond thoughtfully, instead of just reacting. You’ll take away a sense of feeling grounded, confident, and optimistic as you deal with change. You’ll also have tools to share with others when they feel overwhelmed in the face of our VUCA world.

VUCA – Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. A term coined in the 1990’s by the US Army War College, VUCA is now used as an adjective to capture the rapidly changing terrain in our lives, i.e., we all live in a VUCA world. Change is constant. Sometimes it’s all we can do to survive another day. The services and programs clients need are changing. What funders want isn’t the same as it’s always been. The board and how we work with them is constantly evolving. And we are changing too. How can we sustain our energy and our organizations’ success in the face of all these challenges?

We often experience the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity of VUCA as a threat. We react in predictable, yet primitive, ways:
• Fight: We try to fight change, or deny it, even blaming those we hold responsible.
• Flight: We attempt to escape or avoid change, to flee its inescapable path.
• Freeze: We freeze in place, unsure of what to do and unable to make a move in any direction.
• Appease: And, in addition to the standard Fight/Flight/Freeze reactions, we try to survive the threat of VUCA through appeasing the powers that be, simply complying and bending to what others want without considering if it’s the right thing to do or what we are called to do.
When we label change as risky and experience VUCA as dangerous, we go to the most primitive of strategies, and our actions are limited to survival responses. Faced with VUCA, when we most need to access our brain’s amazingly rich capabilities, we simply react.

VUCA Tools™–Values, Us, Curiosity, and Aspirations. VUCA Tools are an antidote to VUCA. They arose from the recognition that thriving in a VUCA world is possible when you have the right tools. VUCA Tools begins with recognizing that having a term for our world’s Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity (VUCA) offers valuable awareness, and even a sense that “I’ve got this!” Accepting VUCA as our new reality enables us to intentionally engage with changing circumstances.
