Field Organizer About Equality Virginia Equality Virginia (EV) is the leading advocacy organization in Virginia seeking equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. EV believes in a truly inclusive Commonwealth where all are equally valued, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, and a Virginia that is a safe, welcoming, and equal place for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals and their families to live, work, and play. Scope of Work EV is hiring a Field Organizer to build a diverse and robust network of LGBT and allied supporters in the Hampton Roads area. We are looking for a passionate, hardworking individual who, ideally, is based in the Virginia Beach area (but not required). With the active support of the EV staff, the Field Organizer will implement an outreach plan to engage grassroots activists and key stakeholders and to build support for nondiscrimination protections in housing, employment, and public accommodations for LGBT Virginians in preparation for the 2020 General Assembly session. This position will involve recruiting and motivating teams of volunteers to work on activities designed to demonstrate broad support for nondiscrimination as well as work to activate supporters to contact their local elected officials. This will include recruiting supporters to engage in constituent meetings, letter writing and phone banking, as well as organizing targeted outreach by key grasstops supporters. The Field Organizer will be required to develop and implement an organizing plan focused on identifying and activating supporters as well as supporting earned media opportunities. Candidates should be comfortable leading volunteer actions, training individuals and groups of supporters, and meeting with local business leaders and elected officials. The position will require a large amount of individual outreach, both over the phone and in-person. Responsibilities: • Recruit, train, and manage volunteers to achieve field plan goals, including recruiting, community education, and canvassing. Work with EV to ensure that recruitment includes intentional effort to build a diverse team that includes LGBT volunteers in leadership positions. • Manage field actions, ensuring adequate training and support for volunteers and developing systems for volunteer leadership. • Support campaign in providing sufficient training for all volunteers on issues of LGBT nondiscrimination, and ensure that outreach includes tactics to foster welcoming environments that promote diversity among volunteer base. • Help to design and implement a canvassing program in at least one community, including assisting with development of training and materials, and supporting the training and development of volunteer leaders. • Complete all required tracking and reporting of field activities and provide regular weekly reporting. • As needed, perform other duties to support the public education campaign, including but not limited to, raising and processing donations, representing Equality Virginia at public events, and working with communications staff to meet spokesperson and media needs.
