Employment opportunities are the building blocks of healthy communities. When people have jobs, they are more likely to be stably housed, have resources to care for their families, and contribute to the local economy. As a result, people thrive and communities prosper. Since 1923, Goodwill of Central and Coastal Virginia (GCCVA) has played a leading role in workforce development, providing valuable support services to individuals who face challenges to securing and retaining employment. The social enterprises that support our mission include 36 retail thrift stores and industrial contracts for governmental and educational institutions. Since 1998, Goodwill has served more than 230,000 job seekers, helping those with disabilities and disadvantages to acquire the skills and credentials needed for successful, long-term employment. The majority of individuals served by GCCVA are either unemployed or underemployed and face barriers to gainful employment such as lack of education, skills, transportation or childcare. Others have disabilities, histories of incarceration, or limited exposure to workforce opportunities as a result of generational poverty. GCCVA plays a leading role in breaking through barriers and connecting people to jobs. In addition to economic benefits, work gives individuals the opportunity to develop a sense of pride and purpose, reach their highest level of self-sufficiency, and productively contribute to the community.
