Patrick Henry Family Services is a non-profit, interdenominational Christian ministry serving children and families since 1961. At the very center of Patrick Henry, Family Services is a motivation by its staff and stakeholders to know and glorify our great God by living out His priorities and passions in this world. “We love because He first loved us” (I Jn. 4:19). That is our essence, our reason for being, our strength, and hope. Apart from that, we would be one more organization that is doing good but only in our own power, endurance and conviction. We believe we are able to know the heart and mind of God, the Creator of all things, through the provision of Scripture. The Bible contains His special revelation to humankind that reflects His essential truths for salvation and godly living. It is primarily from scripture that we know how we should live in this world. Out of this core motivation and understanding of timeless truth derives our purpose and mission. Because Scripture is replete with God’s deep love for the fatherless and the vulnerable (Dt. 10:18, Ps. 68:6, Ps. 146:9, Js. 1:27) and our own experience as not being left as orphans (Jn 14:18), PHFS believes that caring for this population reflects His heartbeat and our Christian responsibility as individuals and His Church. Additionally, when we care for the broken individuals and families, we are, in a small way, testifying to the One who graciously redeemed us. As such, engaging like-minded people as staff and trustees who also embrace our common motivation and organization mission is critical for maintaining our faith-based mission and vision. Organizations who lose their way do so most often because of changes in staffing and board members that no longer consistently reflect the original faith-centered motivation. It is the first domino to fall creating a chain reaction that almost inevitably changes the central motivation, and ultimately the organizational purpose, mission, and vision. All of us are hardwired with the need to know that we are loved, that we matter and that we belong. Since no parent can do this perfectly, those needs find their ultimate fulfillment in Jesus as the true lover of our souls. We also acknowledge that God’s institution of the family is the bedrock of any flourishing society and the principal means of raising children. We believe in the centrality of the Church as God’s primary instrument to preach, live the Gospel and make His priorities widely known. Therefore, we seek to actively engage His body in acting justly and loving mercy (Micah 6:8) as it relates to local children and families in desperate need. We also encourage generous giving by God’s people to support the ministry of Patrick Henry Family Services as the primary means of ongoing financial support. Because we desire integrity and wholeness in all that we are and do, we incorporate our Christian faith into our work-life together. While our primary purpose is not a proselytizing or proclaiming ministry, we do seek opportunities to share not only a cup of cold water but why we offer it as well. We strive to always be respectful of our clients’ needs and wishes and not to pressure them, while still seeking to incorporate Christian principles and Scripture into our professional services and program materials. We intentionally include devotionals and Scripture in our meetings and take time to pray and seek God’s wisdom, strength and presence together as a staff. We also incorporate Scripture and biblical principles in our wall art and branding materials. This serves to remind us of staff, trustees, donors, and volunteers of our reason for being and also gives us an opportunity to express our underlying motivation for service to visitors and clients. And lastly, in our desire to bring honor to God and the preciousness of each soul He brings to PHFS, we pursue a deep and abiding respect of the other (client or fellow worker) with the intent to honor them through our interactions. We pursue godly peace and unity in the face of differences of opinion and conflict that inevitably occurs over the course of work together because our God is a triune God of unity. As such, we will live out the scriptural mandate of speaking the truth in love with each other and resolve conflict in ways that assume the best of the other. All of this stems from our central motivation at Patrick Henry Family Services: to bring glory to our utterly holy, compassionate, merciful God who continually pursues, rescues and loves us as broken individuals.
