Reaching forwardFree laptops for middle schoolers! TechConnect is a new program launching in the 2015/16 school year to serve up to 240 middle school students —from each of the two pilot school sites at Henderson and Boushall middle schools. Three 10-week sessions offered at each site in conjunction with after school programming offer a fun and adventurous learning opportunity. Students will discover more about computers technology and will also use computers to fulfill their school assignments. Students will participate in an orientation that includes class expectations, requirements, internet, social media safety, and a pre/post-survey of the student’s technology knowledge. The weekly classes will include training such as: · Keyboarding/word processing · Animation · Research methods · Video creation · Microsoft Office tools · Coding · App creation · Gaming · Digital Portfolios · Presentations (i.e. Prezi) Students will be expected to demonstrate knowledge of concepts through assignments, quizzes, and surveys. Additionally, upon successful completion of the 10-week course each participant will receive a laptop computer to take home! Jose participates in our TechConnect program, a technology class for middle school students. Jose’s mom said her son is one of four children and when it’s time for homework she gets a little frantic about being able to help each of them. Receiving the new laptop from TechConnect will allow Jose and his siblings to access research materials, prepare projects, and write papers much easier than in the past. Through TechConnect students are introduced to basic computer software while encouraged to be curious and experiment so they can learn at their own speed. This program helps students become familiar with technology and fosters innovation.
