The Communications Director (CD) will lead the creation and implementation of a strategic, multi-faceted communications plan designed to build and strengthen the organization’s role and reputation as a leader and authoritative voice in the field of prevention.
The CD will be responsible for integrating cross-functional messaging for all external and internal communications channels that includes but are not limited to: 1) Creating print and digital tools; 2) Developing and managing social media web site and content development; 3) Producing press releases, agency videos and marketing collateral; 4) Developing and managing communications budget; 5) Preparing presentations and/or speeches; and 6) Supporting resource development, public education, advocacy and program activities.
The Communications Director will manage the Families Forward consultants and work with Resource Development to increase the public’s awareness of Families Forward’s programs and services and support the increased revenue capacity of the organization.
The CD will also work with the Board of Directors under the direction of the CEO.
Develop, implement, and evaluate the annual communications plan according to the direction set by the Families Forward strategic plan.
Develop, maintain and support “messaging” processes designed to enhance Families Forward’s reputation, build trust, strengthen community relations, and engage stakeholders.
Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral materials, while ensuring that materials support the Families Forward’s brand.
Manage organization’s website and multi-platform social media program to increase awareness of the organization’s mission and influence; this includes monitoring compliance with branding guidelines, copyright restrictions and best practices to support increased participation and revenue opportunities.
Assist all departments with the promotion of programs and events through the coordination of print and promotional needs.
Provide guidance and support for staff related to external communications, public information, marketing, graphic design, and community relations; including coordinating with all departments to ensure consistency in message and graphic image for all external communications.
Work in partnership with and provide support for resource development activities.
Develop multimedia content and increase audience engagement on FF’s social media channels by promoting affiliates, increasing original content and expanding use of other platforms.
Work with the board, staff, and affiliates to recognize and execute internal and external communications opportunities and solutions.
Actively cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage of issues of strategic importance to the prevention field, as well as FF’s programs, special events, public announcements, and other projects.
Exercise judgment to prioritize media opportunities, prepare talking points, speeches, presentations, and other supporting material as needed. Serve as the primary media contact.

Oversee electronic internal staff newsletter and communications
Attend and conduct a variety of meetings as assigned; participate on assigned committees.

Knowledge and experience proficient in Microsoft Office applications. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required. A minimum of eight years of experience in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or similar field of study. Experience working with a nonprofit organization that supports statewide models, local affiliates, and community stakeholders preferred. Experience composing and publicizing press releases, human interest pieces, newsletters, annual reports, and professional correspondences. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Mail Chimp, Constant Contact, Adobe, Word Press, and all social media networking. Experience creating and maintaining content for social media e.g. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and Snapchat. Experience with website content management. LICENSURES, CERTIFICATIONS AND ENDORSEMENTS: Possession of a valid Virginia Driver’s license|
|Commensurate with experience. Likely starting range between $48,000-$55,000|
