Founded in 1987 and located at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture (VMHC), the John Marshall Foundation engages with and educates the public about the rule of law under the Constitution. Our programs include Justice in the Classroom, a middle- and high-school civics education program; the John Marshall Library, a digital humanities project under development; the John Marshall Federal Courts Program, a partnership with William & Mary Law School and the Omohundro Institute of Early American History & Culture; and preservation projects, programs and partnerships with VMHC, Preservation Virginia, and others who believe that honest exchanges about the past can lead to a better today. The John Marshall Foundation is committed to history telling that embraces the contributions and points of view of all, using the life, character, and service of Chief Justice John Marshall as a gateway for exploring our vast constitutional founding and the triumphs and failures of the American judiciary.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Education and Programs is an essential part of the Foundation’s executive leadership team and provides dynamic management in program oversight, implementation and evaluation. RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsible for the day-to-day leadership and direction of the Foundation’s programs. Direct and maintain working relationships with school administrators, teachers, education consultants and students to schedule and deliver the Foundation’s civics education programs.

Facilitate and manage the development of a pilot civics education program in partnership with an after-school programs provider that serves local middle and high schools.

Manage the continued online presentation of the Foundation’s programs and the introduction of additional remote learning opportunities.

Develop and strengthen relationships with current and future partners in secondary education, the nonprofit sector, the legal community, and within higher education.

Collaborate with the Foundation’s leadership team in developing budgets for programs and for development purposes; manage program budgets.

Represent the Foundation at outside meetings and conferences; develop and deliver presentations and interviews in a variety of settings.

Work with board members, staff, and program partners to expand the Foundation’s current programs and develop visionary and strategic program goals and partnerships.

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree or demonstrated enthusiasm for a related field (law, American history, education, government, etc. …) preferred. Excellence in organizational management and commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation. Ability to communicate and engage effectively with diverse groups of students, volunteers and program stakeholders. Familiarity with digital platforms and remote learning environments preferred. Experience in program development, implementation and oversight a plus. Ability to work effectively with school administrators and teachers, lawyers and judges, community organizations, university leaders and scholars, staff, and board members to set and achieve strategic objectives. Strong administrative and communication skills required.
