Executive Director

RVA Rapid Transit

RVA Rapid Transit (rvarapidtransit.org) is a local nonprofit dedicated to educating and advocating for public transit across the Richmond region. Our aim is to make it easy to get around everyday life by bus, because frequent, far-reaching transit helps people lead healthier, more productive, and more interconnected lives.

RVA Rapid Transit’s work focuses on education and advocacy campaigns rooted in rider voices as well as collaboration with nonprofits, service organizations, businesses, and public officials. We are seeking an Executive Director to spearhead and advance this work, which includes leading RVA Rapid Transit’s administration, development, and fundraising as a nonprofit.

We also want to highlight that our region’s long history of racism has led to a fractured, limited public transportation system that disparately impacts the most historically marginalized people in our society, especially people of color, people with disabilities, and people with low-incomes. These communities are central to the work we do, and we strongly encourage applications from folks within these or other historically marginalized communities.

See rvarapidtransit.org/staff-and-board for more information on the position and on RVA Rapid Transit.

Required Qualifications:
REQUIRED: (1) Minimum of 3-5 years of leadership experience in nonprofit administration, staff oversight and support, and fundraising; (2) Experience organizing advocacy campaigns, including development of communications and messaging; (3) Ability to connect quickly and respectfully with public transit riders and create opportunities for their input and leadership; (4) Commitment to racial equity and social justice; (5) High emotional intelligence with the ability to work collaboratively across diverse groups (both within and outside the organization) to get results; (6) Experience facilitating meetings and group decision making; (7) Ability to work independently and as part of a team; (8) Exceptional time management and organizational skills with an ability to meet deadlines while managing concurrent project timelines. PREFERRED: (1) Lived experience using and relying on public transit in Richmond, VA, or elsewhere; (2) Familiarity with office technology and information systems, including online communications and word processin; (3) Familiarity with public transit governance and funding in Richmond, VA or elsewhere.
