Job Summary

We seek a relationally and administratively gifted Exceptional Education teacher with high school teaching experience, with a VA Standard Teacher License preferred. This position requires an awareness of the urban student’s context and a resolve to engage with students in culturally sensitive ways, and in small classroom settings. Church Hill Academy is committed to trauma informed pedagogical practices and restorative justice. We seek instructors who view their students as whole people. This position is part-time but hours can be flexible, as long as 25 school hours are reached per week.

Primary Responsibility

Assist our school in moving towards a full-inclusion model of teaching students with exceptional learning needs within mainstream classes.

Specific Responsibilities

– Supervision by the Head of School;
– Report to school daily for a total of 25 hours per week (Projected school hours for students in 2018-2019 are 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday);
– Originate Student Learning Plans (similar to, but shorter than traditional IEPs) within the first quarter of school for all referred students;
– Observe students with SLPs in class and assist content teachers in implementing student learning accommodations;
– Some pull-out instruction for students struggling in their core classes;
– Initiate regular communication with students’ families to discuss SLP progress and/or changes;
– Attend a weekly CHA Staff Meeting when possible, Tuesdays from 3:45-4:45 p.m.;
– Provide modifications to teacher lesson plans that align with Virginia Standards of Learning vis a vis pacing and course content as well as differentiation for students with exceptional learning needs;
– Creatively engage students in pull-out instruction when necessary;
– Exhibit a genuinely caring attitude to all students;
– Maintain a positive, calm attitude and voice with students;
– Work cooperatively with colleagues, volunteers, and parents;
– Communicate student learning needs effectively and often to all school personnel, in advocacy for Exceptional Education students;
– Cooperatively work alongside Elk Hill Farms staff (Outpatient Therapists and Therapeutic Day Treatment Counselors);
– Incorporate appropriate instructional technology often;
– Attend various, limited after school activities such as Parent-Teacher Conferences, Back to School Night, and special seasonal events when possible;
– Establish routines with students that align with best teaching practices;
– Remain flexible and resilient as the school undergoes the accreditation process through the Virginia Association of Independent Schools;
– Follow the CHAT Employee Manual and adhere to CHAT mission and values;
– Abide by and hold students accountable to the CHA Family Handbook;
– Seek one off-site Professional Development session for Exceptional Education teachers per year.

Required Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications - A high school diploma or the equivalent and a bachelor’s degree in a related field such as Education or Exceptional Education from an accredited college or university; - Secondary Education teaching experience OR enrollment in a state-recognized teacher licensure program; - One year of programmatic experience with high school students; - An intentional and practiced commitment to serving and engaging community in the East End; - Effective communication skills, written and oral; - Personal confession of faith in Jesus Christ and commitment to the vision and mission of CHAT
