Communities In Schools Overview:

By bringing resources, services, parents and volunteers into schools, Communities In Schools creates a community of caring adults who work hand-in-hand with educators to make sure young people have the tools they need to stay in school and achieve in life. As the nation’s largest dropout prevention organization, we serve nearly 1.5 million students in 2,300 schools.

Key Responsibilities:

● Implement and manage the core functions of a local affiliate:
– Community partnerships
– Resource development/fundraising
– Marketing and public relations
– Managing, expanding and developing CIS sites
– Providing and/or brokering quality youth programming and services
– Data collection, evaluation and reporting
– Mobilizing financial and human resources to support affiliate and program operations

● Demonstrate effective leadership, attributes of a critical and innovative thinker and progressive decision-maker

● Establish and maintain productive working relationships with members of the CIS-Petersburg Board of Directors and CIS of Virginia

● Support the various strategic planning, implementation and evaluation processes of the board

● Develop the Board of Directors meeting agenda in conjunction with the Board Chairperson

● Demonstrate comprehension of CIS accreditation standards and provide leadership in the maintenance of those standards

● Establish and develop significant relationships with the Petersburg City Public Schools (PCPS) administration, the local school principals, teachers, staff, students, parents, volunteers and the Petersburg community at large

● Serve in the role of the primary development officer and provide suggestions, strategies, procedures and opportunities for fundraising

● Select and train all management staff, including site coordinators

● Oversee coordination of all student and family services

● Negotiate agency agreements, grants and memoranda of understanding (MOUs)

● Establish and maintain appropriate and interactive linkages with citywide, school district and social service agency personnel

● Establish and maintain clear documentation of all program correspondence and reports

● Submit quarterly progress reports to appropriate local, state and national CIS offices

● Develop and maintain a management information/evaluation system

● Establish and maintain appropriate linkages with media representatives and carry out public presentations when requested

● Oversee the CIS-Petersburg website and social media

● Design, present and carry out operational plans

Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in public administration, education, social science or related field. Seasoned, experienced management professional. High level of interpersonal relationship skills and exemplary oral and written communication skills a must. Well-connected in the education, social service and business community. Excellent organization, training, coordination, fund-raising and leadership skills. Sensitivity to needs of youth and diverse ethnic populations. Experience or a working knowledge and comprehension of the responsibilities and requirements of a non-profit organization. Although it is not required, additional consideration will be given to applicants who currently reside or plan to reside within an approximately 15-mile radius of the City of Petersburg.
