Initiatives of Change, USA (IofC) has an exciting opportunity to lead a multi-sector effort in Richmond to address the legacies of slavery and structural racism through the Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) enterprise. With funding from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, IofC will convene a wide range of actors from the government, corporate, education, spiritual/faith, cultural, media, and other sectors to work together toward greater racial equity in Richmond through a process of narrative change, racial healing, and relationship building.
To help launch and implement this complex, multi-year project, Initiatives of Change, USA is seeking a TRHT Program Officer for Narrative Change Activities. This individual will ensure that the project’s day-to-day activities related to changing Richmond’s dominant historical narratives are implemented in line with established work plans and budget parameters. While many of the responsibilities listed below indicate a support role, the Program Officer will have an important opportunity to shape a long-term and potentially deeply impactful program to transform Richmond.
• Contribute to the identification and engagement of new and existing TRHT partners;
• Support development of annual work plans, budgets, and reports;
• Provide necessary logistical or strategic support to ensure timely completion of all program activities;
• Contribute to project monitoring and evaluation as outlined in the TRHT monitoring and evaluation plan;
• As and when delegated by the Program Director, represent the TRHT program to the Richmond community at regular meetings and special events;
• Maintain working relationships with key TRHT partner staff (including government offices, corporations, universities, museums, etc.)
• Routinely identify opportunities for collaboration with additional stakeholders in the Richmond region;
• Ensure that activities in the Narrative Change portfolio remain within budgetary parameters; and
• Other tasks as required.
• Internal: The Program Officer will report directly to the TRHT Program Director. He or she will also work with the TRHT Program Officer for Relationship Building and IofC’s core staff.
• External: The Program Officer will support the Program Director in developing and maintaining relationships with members of the TRHT coalition and expanding the coalition to include additional members from all sectors.
About the Organization:
Based in Richmond, VA, Initiatives of Change, USA, through its Hope in the Cities program, has led a sustained community-wide effort for racial reconciliation, dialogue and trustbuilding for more than two decades. Starting in 1993, this former slave market, Capital of the Confederacy, and leading proponent of Massive Resistance, has pioneered a nationally recognized model for acknowledging history and building partnerships across traditional divides. IofC/Hope in the Cities offers consultation, leadership formation, experiential learning and facilitation for community leaders in all sectors across the US.
In the international sphere, the Caux Scholars Program teaches students to analyze conflicts, to understand the factors that create and sustain conflicts, and to provide practical understanding of approaches to resolving conflicts – conflict prevention, and transitional justice. Annually, twenty students from around the world are selected for this four-week course held in Caux, Switzerland during the Initiatives of Change global summer conferences. Since its inception in 1991, the Caux Scholars Program has graduated 475 students from more than 100 countries. The program has an active alumni network, drawn from all sectors of community – academic, politics, international organizations, grassroots institutions.
|Bachelor’s degree in a relevant social sciences discipline; 8-10 years of experience in community development and/or racial healing and equity programs in Richmond or elsewhere; demonstrated program management skills (including financial management; small grants management experience a plus); relationship cultivation, networking, and representation skills; facilitation, dialogue and training skills; problem solving skills; excellent written and oral communication skills in English; commitment to IofC’s spiritual values; demonstrated ability to effectively manage competing priorities; strong computer skills including MS Word and Excel. Desired Qualifications: experience in building a complex, fast-paced work environment; experience working with rights-oriented programs; experience in culturally responsive programming and evaluation approaches; program management experience.|
