The Virginia SMP Program is one of 50 SMP programs located in each of the fifty States, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands. SMP programs, formerly known as Senior Medicare Patrol programs, help Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries protect, detect, and report health care fraud.
Like all SMP programs, the Virginia SMP program recruits and trains volunteers across the Commonwealth to help educate local beneficiaries and prevent health care fraud in their local communities. Most volunteers are retired and trained to help disseminate SMP information or provide group education and community outreach and information about how to detect and report health care fraud.
