Recap: Amazing Raise Strategies for Success

On Wednesday, June 19th ConnectVA held Amazing Raise Strategies for Success in partnership with The Community Foundation Serving Richmond & Central Virginia and The Cameron Foundation to help kick off community planning for the upcoming 2013 Amazing Raise this fall – 6 a.m. on September 18th to 6 p.m. on September 19th.

Phillip Giaramita, GiveRichmond/GiveSouthsideVA Coordinator, provided an overview from the 2012 Amazing Raise which saw over $1.2 million in unrestricted funds donated to local nonprofits in over 15,000 gifts. Indeed, the average number of donations increased from 15 to 38 per organization and over 75% of participants reported having new donors contributing for the first time. Kim Russell, Vice President of Communications for The Community Foundation, provided an overview of the 2013 Amazing Raise including rules, prices, eligibility and enhancements. The session then transitioned into a peer-to-peer learning session on donor engagement strategies and tactics moderated by Alan Hutson of the Monument Group and featuring a panel of successful 2012 participants including Kiffy Johnson, Director of Donor Relations with the James House, Brandon Butterworth, Development Officer with Historic Richmond Foundation, Cindy DiCello, Development Manager with Sports Backers, and Kathie Cox, Chair, Fund Development Committee with Church Hill Activities & Tutoring. Key takeaways included:

  • Personalize your message – help donors relate to your work or cause
  • Get an early start and be creative – begin your planning now and start educating (and re-educating) your donors 
  • Take advantage of your organization’s strengths – tap into networks, show off great space for a live event, create a matching opportunity
  • Be sure to optimize your Give portrait (registration date is August 1!)
