“It becomes a cascading effect that reaches nearly every business sector in Virginia — that is the power of the association industry and its effect on our community.”
Tell us a little about yourself and your work.
The Virginia Society of Association Executives (VSAE) is the professional society for association executives in the Commonwealth. We focus on providing high quality education and professional networking to the association management industry. VSAE’s members are the association professional who staff associations in Virginia and we focus on helping them grow professionally, which in turn has a positive impact on the work they do for their members. It becomes a cascading effect that reaches nearly every business sector in Virginia. This is the power of the association industry and its effect on community.
I currently serve as the Vice President of Professional Development & Communications, so my responsibilities include all our educational content, our communications including social media, and our sponsorship and advertising programs.
What do you find most rewarding about your work? What have you learned?
I absolutely love what I do. I’m an association geek, and I get to wake up every morning and go to work for the association of associations in Virginia. What I do has a wide ranging impact on the world around me. I get to think strategically about how best to serve my members. I get to interact with some of the smartest, most passionate, and amazing people on a day-to-day basis.
Many of the challenges I have faced in my career have been of my own doing. Often times the way I have overcome them is by having an amazing network of experienced mentors — formal and informal — from whom to seek counsel.
What’s coming next that really excites you?
The next generation of leadership in association industry leaves me with such a feeling of awe. The ideas, passion, and new ways of thinking they bring to the table are going to have such a positive impact on our industry and the world in general. How we harness that energy and partner it with the experience and wisdom of more seasoned people to achieve great things is what excites me. VSAE has a strong network of these leaders with our emerging association professionals group. I also have the opportunity to work with the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE)’s young professionals group. Thinking about and working with the next generation of leadership is what’s coming next for us and I would argue everyone.
