YNPN RVA Recommends: Getting Started in the Nonprofit Sector

So you want to work for a nonprofit? You want to use your time and talents to make a difference, not just a profit. Fantastic, you’ll be in great company. Here are some easy tips for getting started in the nonprofit sector.

You have probably heard that finding a job is about knowing the right people. Well, it’s true. Maybe you already know the right people, and you just need to let them know that you’re in the market. If you’re new to the area or to the field, networking is essential. It is all about putting your best self forward and genuinely connecting with people who share your interests. YNPN RVA offers networking opportunities for young and early-career nonprofit professionals to mingle and learn from each other including YNPN RVA & C3’s Fostering a Creative, Multi-Generational Workforce on March 11th. Join YNPN RVA as we explore innovative and collaborative approaches to culture, recruitment, work/life balance, and workspace options that help to foster a creative multi-generational workforce.

This is a great way to learn more about the sector and network at the same time. You will gain a greater understanding of nonprofit management and processes as well as what jobs are out there. Additionally, volunteering for a cause you care about introduces you to people who share your values — leadership, staff, clients, other volunteers — and these are the same people who can connect you with potential employers. Learn where you can find volunteer and board service positions.

Audit Your Online Presence

Take a look at your online presence through the eyes of potential employers. Search yourself and scour images. If you see something you don’t like, see if you can have it removed or taken down. Be sure to check your social media public settings. What can someone who is not your friend see? This is a potential employer’s first impression of you so make sure you’re presenting a genuine, professional version of yourself.

Review Current Openings

Take heart in knowing that the nonprofit sector in Virginia is the 3rd largest employer. If you have a passion and a drive to do your best, we’re confident there is a place for you in nonprofit land. Be sure to review current job openings in ConnectVA’s Job Finder — the go-to source for nonprofit jobs in our region.

I am on the Junior Board for Historic Richmond and we have an exciting young professionals networking event happening this week, Thursday May 5th. The Hofheimer Building in Scott’s Addition has been recently renovated, and the Junior Board of Historic Richmond is offering an exclusive tour and complimentary food and drinks to attendees of the event.

I’ve included a link to the event below, we are trying to share about the event, if you could share the link via YNPN’s Facebook page, or any other platform that you have that would be a huge help for us, as it is a great event and an exciting opportunity for young professionals in the city!

I do not know what your policy is on sharing affiliate events, but I was tasked with contacting other area organizations to help get the word out about the event.

    Best and thanks in advance,

    Julie Sjostrom
